The AEU Tasmania Branch voiced its concerns over The Liberal Party’s intention to loosen Tasmania’s gun laws this morning.
“Tough gun laws were put in place for a reason and for the Liberals, on the eve of an election, to propose watering down gun laws is beyond belief,” said AEU President Helen Richardson.
“The safety of our communities, our schools and our kids should be above politics.
“Community safety and school safety MUST be a top priority for any party wanting to form government. A government should always put community safety first and foremost.
“We should be proud of our current gun laws, not be looking to weaken them.
“We never want to see threats posed to students and staff in Tasmanian schools that have occurred in schools in the USA. Schools should never be a place of gun violence.
“Australian gun laws are praised around the world, and we need to ensure they are maintained for the safety of all.”
