I saw the wake and had to move fast. Instinct told me that if I didn’t get the bow of my four-metre tinnie towards the onrushing wake, I’d be in trouble.

I hit the motor and thanked Neptune that it started immediately. By the time I had turned the bow to the wake, it hit me and I rocked as the big fella passed between me and the lighthouse.

Maybe he hadn’t seen me, but he sure heard me …
