IF there was any doubt where Tasmania’s Tour de France hero Richie Porte hails from, you need only look at the chain around his neck.
As he stamps out the kilometres on the front of the peloton through the French countryside, the Sky Racing rider proudly wears a necklace sporting a map of Tassie.
It is a stirling silver pendant on a 65cm gold and silver chain hand-crafted by Launceston jeweller, and Richie’s former coach of 10 years, Mark Matthews.
Richie’s mother Penny commissioned the chain and pendant as a reminder of home.
Penny and husband Ian are in France this week watching their 28-year-old peloton-punisher fly the Aussie flag high as general for Sky’s race leader Chris Froome, of the UK.
“It’s very exciting being here watching it up close,” Penny told the Mercury.
