with street corners painted
in marigold-vomit

industrial-strength
cigars, puffing second-hand
smoke into the sky

three inland surf shops
dozens of bars, multiple football ovals
six fast-food chains
and one theatre

is it easier?
maybe not, but I’d like to ask them
to find a moment
worthy of haiku,
where sewerage
and the paper mill meet.

is it easier
for great poets
to romanticise their towns
when paris is rome is
new york is
london is berlin
is it easier
for them than my home
