The 1MDB affair is threatening the political stability of the Malaysian government . Malaysia’s troubled state investment fund 1MDB is under investigation after media reports that funds had been transferred to personal bank accounts associated with Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Mr Najib has denied the allegations that he took money for personal gain but he’s under increasing political pressure to resign.

• John Hayward in Comments: A few years ago Rewcastle-Brown gave a talk to a meagre audience at Launceston’s Tramsheds about one of the world’s great kleptocracies,  Sarawak’s Taib regime. The talk centred mainly on the almost total devastation Taib and Co had wrought on the formerly lush jungles of that state.  There was little on the Sarawak colony of Tasmania, which is still supplying it with cut-rate wood and chain-of-custody cover. While Taib has achieved international recognition for his activities,  his antipodean outpost is still struggling to grasp the distinction between corruption and business as usual.
