LAST NIGHT it was my distinct pleasure to attend the Tasmanian premiere of Scott Millwood’s new feature documentary What ever happened to Brenda Hean?.

Millwood burst into the documentary world in 2003 with the poetic and poignant portrayal of the lives of Tasmanian wilderness photographers Olegas Truchanas and Peter Dombrovskis in his film Wildness.  But, as Scott told me last night, he finished Wildness still feeling like he had more to say. And he proclaims to have now said all he needs to about Tasmania in his new film.

Certainly What ever happened to Brenda Hean? film is packed with the nitty gritty facts about the conflict over Lake Pedder that gave rise to the world’s first Green party and a still growing environmental movement in Tasmania. These details are woven into the tragic story of the unexpectedly glamorous Brenda Hean who lent the Pedder campaign a sophisticated, groomed public face not often seen amongst environmentalists these days.

But surprisingly Millwood’s latest work is also laced with a certain dark humour about Tasmanians that I think only a native born Tasmanian (like Scott) could get away with. Despite the brevity of the issues Millwood encourages us to laugh at that which we can only be embarrassed about – Tasmanian’s ignorance and the dark secrets and lack of transparency that still dwell in this oft forgotten deep southern island.
