The Minister for Community Development, Cassy O’Connor today invited Tasmanians to take part in the inaugural Harmony Day Football Cup to be held on the 20 March 2011.
Ms O’Connor said that Football Federation Tasmania together with Hobart United Football Club would hold the Harmony Day Football Cup at the Hobart Showgrounds.
“Harmony Day is celebrated annually in Australia on March 21st, and accompanies the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination,” Ms O’Connor said.
“The Harmony Day message is that Everyone Belongs, and every year events are organised nationally to celebrate cultural diversity and encourage respect, understanding and inclusiveness.
“This event is about participation and bringing the game to parts of the community that may not engage with the beautiful game of soccer on a regular basis.
“It will also be an opportunity to celebrate the vibrant diversity of Tasmania and to strengthen community connections.
“The day’s format will be a mini “World Cup” tournament of friendly 30-minutes games, culminating in a play-off for the Cup.
“FFT and Hobart United hope that the Harmony Day Football Cup can be held on an annual basis.
The Harmony Day Football Cup will be from 10am (9.30am arrival) to 2pm at the Hobart Showgrounds.
