THE redevelopment costs of the Elwick racecourse have blown out from an original $14 million two years ago to a massive $27.1 million. And work on the complex is still not finished. TOTE Tasmania chairman Michael Kent said the three horse racing, pacing and greyhound tracks now had a total cost of $14.2 million, while the grandstand complex was likely to cost an additional $12 million.
But Mr Kent denied there had been any shock “blowout” in costs, despite parliamentary records from 2004 showing that the new racetracks were expected to cost $6 million in total and the grandstand $8 million.
